Use an AI assistant to organise an expense worksheet, then check every number yourself. This guide covers a limited administrative task. It does not recommend investments, predict returns or interpret health records.
Prepare a safe input
Start with a copy containing only dates, broad categories and amounts. Remove account numbers, transaction references, names, addresses and other identifiers. Prefer invented sample data while learning the workflow. Removing identifiers reduces what you share; it does not certify that a service is private. Inspect its current data handling before using real records.
Keep the bank statement or original ledger as the source of truth. An AI-generated table is a draft, not a replacement for your records.
Try this bounded prompt
Organise the supplied rows by category. Preserve each amount exactly. Do not infer missing purchases or income. List ambiguous rows separately. Show which original rows contribute to each subtotal. Do not give investment, tax or medical advice.
Check the draft with a simple example
The following amounts are fictional, not a recommended household budget:
| Row | Category | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Groceries | ₹1,200 |
| 2 | Transport | ₹800 |
| 3 | Data plan | ₹500 |
| 4 | Rent | ₹4,500 |
The total is ₹7,000. If a draft reports ₹7,500, reconcile its rows rather than accepting the fluent explanation. Check duplicate transactions, refunds, omitted rows and whether every amount uses the same currency and time period. Recalculate with a calculator or spreadsheet.
Questions the worksheet can help you inspect
- Which rows are uncategorised, and what record would clarify them?
- Which charges recur, and have you confirmed their actual frequency?
- Does a category total change because of an error, a one-off purchase or genuinely different spending?
An apparent pattern is a question to investigate, not proof of its cause. Do not let a chatbot invent purchases, transfer money or choose financial products.
Decide whether to keep using the assistant
Record preparation, checking and correction time. If cleaning the output takes longer than organising the small worksheet manually, stop or narrow the task. Keep corrections in your own ledger; do not assume the assistant learns them automatically.
For the separate task of planning income, expenses and savings, use our beginner budget guide. This page focuses on checking an AI-assisted worksheet, not a general budget plan.
