How to Apply for Government Jobs in India: A Step-by-Step Checklist

How to apply for government jobs in India — step-by-step guide for students and freshers

Updated 6 October 2026. This guide explains how to check a government recruitment notice and submit an application. It is not a list of vacancies currently open.

Before filling a form, answer three questions: Is this the official recruitment notice? Do you meet its requirements by the stated cut-off dates? Can you complete every required step before the deadline? A saved registration or a payment receipt alone may not mean your application is complete.

1. Find the notice before opening an application form

Start on the recruiting organisation’s own website. Open its recruitment or examination section, find the exact post or exam, and download both the notice and any later amendments. An amendment may be called a corrigendum. Match the advertisement number and recruitment year; similar job titles can have different rules.

Where to begin your search
RecruitmentOfficial starting point
SSC examinationsStaff Selection Commission: select the examination notice and follow its application instructions.
UPSC examinations and recruitmentUnion Public Service Commission: choose the relevant examination or recruitment advertisement. The site links to its application services.
State departments, public service commissions and public-sector employersStart from the department or employer’s official website and follow its recruitment link. Do not assume that another organisation’s application process applies.

A third-party article can help you discover an opening, but the notice and its amendments are the documents to use for your decision. Check where an application link leads from the official site, rather than trusting a forwarded message, a logo or a search advertisement.

2. Make a one-page eligibility checklist

Copy the following into a notebook or document. Beside each answer, record the notice’s page or paragraph so you can check it again. Treat an unanswered eligibility question as something to resolve before paying.

Information to extract from your chosen notice
CheckWhat to write down
Exact postAdvertisement number, post code, location and whether the engagement is permanent, temporary, contractual or an apprenticeship.
QualificationRequired subject, level, marks or experience; the date by which you must have it; and whether an awaiting result is accepted.
Age and other conditionsAge calculation date, any applicable relaxation, nationality, language, domicile, licence, physical or medical requirements.
CertificatesThe required format, issuing authority, relevant financial year or validity period, and when each certificate must be produced.
Dates and costsApplication deadline with time, payment deadline, fee or exemption conditions, and any separate correction dates and charges.
SelectionTests or interviews, syllabus, qualifying stages, document verification and any attempt limit.

There is no universal government-job age limit, fee, certificate-validity period or correction window. A qualification that is sufficient for one post may not meet another post’s subject or experience requirement. If a rule is unclear, use the helpdesk listed in that specific notice and keep its response.

A real example of reading a notice

The original SSC Constable (GD) 2026 notice, dated 1 December 2025, illustrates why dates must be separated. Its opening schedule listed an application deadline of 31 December 2025 at 23:00, a fee-payment deadline of 1 January 2026 at 23:00, and a correction window of 8–10 January 2026. Section 9 specified a ₹100 fee with listed exemptions.

This is a historical reading exercise, not an invitation to apply. Those dates have passed. Later notices can amend an original schedule. For your own recruitment, check the latest official updates instead of copying this example’s dates or fee.

3. Prepare the documents the notice actually asks for

  • Keep the identity and educational records needed to enter your details accurately.
  • Prepare category, disability, domicile, experience or other certificates only where relevant to the post and your claim.
  • Read the upload instructions for each file: format, size, dimensions, legibility and any required declaration.
  • Check whether a photograph must be uploaded or captured during the application. For example, the SSC notice above includes live-photograph instructions; a saved passport photograph is not a universal substitute.

Do not rely on a generic “20–100 KB” rule or assume that every certificate must be less than a year old. Use the exact requirements in the notice. Review names, dates and document numbers for consistency; resolve discrepancies through the stated process rather than altering a document.

4. Register, then complete the exam-specific application

Use an email address and mobile number you can continue to access. Keep login details private. Follow the official portal’s registration instructions, then check whether a separate application must be submitted for your selected post.

This distinction matters: UPSC’s May 2025 announcement about its application portal separates account creation, universal registration and a common form from the examination-specific application. Completing a reusable profile does not by itself apply for every examination.

  1. Select the correct recruitment and post code.
  2. Enter the requested details using your records, including any preferences whose order matters.
  3. Upload or capture documents as instructed and inspect the previews.
  4. Read the completed form before accepting declarations.
  5. Pay the prescribed fee through the official application flow if a fee applies.
  6. Complete the final submission step and check the portal’s application status.

Allow time to resolve an upload or payment problem before the closing date. Do not assume an extension will be granted.

5. Check payment and submission separately

Some recruitment examinations charge an official application fee. That is different from an agent demanding money for guaranteed selection. The amount, exemptions and payment method must match the official notice. Do not transfer money to a personal account because someone says they can secure a government job.

If money is debited but the application still shows unpaid, save the transaction reference, read the portal’s payment instructions and contact its helpdesk. Do not assume either that the form has been accepted or that an immediate second payment is required.

Keep a private folder containing the notice, relevant amendments, submitted application, application number and payment acknowledgement. Open the downloaded form and check it is the completed version. Record the portal status and the date you checked it.

6. Track what happens after applying

Create a simple application log with these fields: organisation; post and advertisement number; application number; submission status; payment status; next announced step; official link; and next date to check. Avoid storing passwords in a shared tracker.

Check the official site for corrections, exam arrangements and document-verification notices. If a correction facility is announced, read which fields can change, its cost and its closing time. After a permitted correction, save the new confirmation rather than relying on the original copy.

Common questions before you pay

Can I apply in my final year?

Only if the particular notice allows your situation. Look for the qualification cut-off date and any provisional-application conditions. An expected result is not automatically equivalent to holding the required qualification.

Can I use the same category certificate for every recruitment?

Do not assume so. Compare the notice’s required format, relevant period and issuing authority with your document. Ask the recruiting body’s helpdesk about a mismatch before claiming the benefit.

Will I get a chance to correct a mistake?

Do not plan on it. Check the notice and later correction instructions. Some information may be locked even when a correction window exists.

How many exams should I apply for?

Choose eligible posts you would accept and can realistically prepare for. Compare fees, travel costs, exam-date clashes and preparation time. Applying to a fixed number of exams is not a requirement for success.

Your next step

Choose one genuine notice, complete the eligibility checklist and resolve missing information before opening its form. If application fees and travel will strain your budget, use the worked example in our beginner’s budgeting guide to plan those costs.
